Intermodal Update

10 March 2009
Intermodal Overview
The Intermodal Project, a collaborative effort of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, working in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration, will drastically enhance your travel experience at TF Green.

The project will take an anticipated 530,000 man hours to complete and at peak construction will have 300 workers on site. Once completed, the $267 million transportation hub will allow MBTA commuter rail service to TF Green airport and Warwick, RI. This will be the closest rail line (1,570 feet) to a major airport terminal in the country.

A six level parking garage will span the railroad tracks and accommodate both commuter parking and rental car facilities. East of the tracks and adjoined to the garage will be a Customer Service Operations (CSO) building that will house rental car agency staff. Connecting the CSO building and TF Green will be a 1,200 ft. sky bridge with moving walkways to accelerate travel.

The project is broken into four major areas of construction - the Terminal End Improvements (TEI); the Skywalk; the customer service operations building (CSO) and the parking garage and fueling platforms. These four major components of the Intermodal project are being built concurrently.

Construction Outlook- March 2009
Terminal End Improvements (TEI)

The TEI location has progressed with steel erection beginning on March 3, 2009. Welding, bolting and other steel detail work will continue for the next 30 days. The upper "departure" road canopy glass has been removed, seventy percent (70%) of which will be reused when construction is complete. New underground drainage structures have been placed and utility work is underway.

Skywalk
Concrete piers continue to be formed, reinforced and poured. The last 35’ single pier has been formed and only the double piers on the west side of Post Road remain to be constructed. Piers are being backfilled as they are completed. It is anticipated that pier work will be completed by mid April.

Customer Service Operations Building (CSO)
A temporary stair tower has been installed at the CSO building to access the third level and roof. A roof membrane is being installed as well as temporary roof drainage. Workers will pour the concrete slab on the third level of the building by the end of March.

Garage and Fueling Platforms
Mini-piles are being drilled and should be completed by mid-April. These 150 mini piles run parallel to the railroad tracks. Catenary foundations that support the structural steel which carry the electrical wires suspended above the tracks have been installed. These foundations will support steel beams and the electric wires that will provide power for the trains. H piles are being prepped for pouring of pile cap foundations. Pre-cast concrete continues to be installed in sections to form the parking garage structure. As of the first week of March, approximately 160 sections of pre-cast concrete had already been installed to the west of the railroad tracks.
